Program Description:

Does the idea of writing your memoir tempt you — or intimidate you — or maybe both? No matter what your age, you’ve had unique experiences worth retelling. Where you’ve lived, what you’ve created, whom you’ve influenced and been influenced by, what your passions are, what challenges you’ve faced down: these are all aspects of your life worth exploring in writing. The process of writing a memoir can be therapeutic, creative, informative, or some combination of all of these. Deciding where to begin, what to cover, what to omit, how to balance detail with emotion: It’s easy to bog down in the early stages of a memoir project, but that doesn’t need to stop you. This three-week class will meet over Zoom. We will combine discussion about the memoir process, writing prompts and student contributions as we contemplate how to tell our life stories. Very short writing exercises during class, along with the opportunity to have longer pieces of writing critiqued by the group between meetings, will ensure that you make progress on your project. After three weeks, you’ll have tools, strategies and the motivation to get your memoir done!
