Kay Hurley has studied lichens for 20 years. She works on the lichen team on bio blitzes and on the collections in the Farlow Herbaria. Her weekly nature column, which ran for 10 years in a community newspaper, was subsequently expanded and published as the book “Who’s Who in the Natural World.” Her new book, “Lichenpedia”, is a collection of lichen stories. Her interest extends to animalcules, soil microbes, and diatomstiny things, the underdogs, and the overlooked.

6pm: Lichenpedia: A Book Talk with author Kay Hurley and illustrator Susan.
$10/person to attend in-person at Thoreau Farm. Registration required.

Lichenpedia is a delightfully entertaining and beautifully illustrated A–Z treasury about the strange, obscure, and remarkable world of lichens, from their unique and essential roles in nature and the ways they are used in dyeing, brewing, and drug-making to how they have inspired writers and artists, from Henry David Thoreau to modern painters.
