McKibben Free after 3 Days in Jail

This is what Thoreau was writing about!  In the largest civil disobedience protest in recent environmental history, 56 people – including activist and Thoreau Farm Trust Honorary Board member Bill McKibben – were arrested and jailed for 3 days during a protest at the White House opposing a proposed pipeline that would connect tar sands in Alberta to oil refineries in Texas.  Read more at The Burlington Free Press.

Leaders of the nation’s largest environmental organizations released a letter calling on President Obama to block the Keystone XL oil pipeline.  Read the letter at: Stop the Pipeline.

Looking Down on a Shooting Star

Thoreau wrote in Walden, “A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is Earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.”  He probably would have felt the same way looking at this beautiful picture from space.

Robyn Griggs Lawrence expands on this idea in her book Simply Imperfect: Revisiting the Wabi-Sabi House.  Read an excerpt titled, “How to See,” at Mother Earth News.
