Visit Thoreau Farm

2019 Season

The Thoreau birthplace will open for the season on May 4, 2019. We will be open on Saturdays and Sundays through October 27. Visits to the house are by guided tour only. Tours are at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. You do not need to take a tour to visit the grounds. You may also arrange a tour at another time by contacting us at or 978.451.0300.

FREE Admission and FREE Guided Tours on Saturday and Sunday during the 2019 season in honor of the 202nd  anniversary of Henry David Thoreau’s birth.

Admission fees– $6 adult and children FREE– might be applicable during weekdays and weekends to accommodate tour groups.

Directions to Thoreau Farm:

Thoreau Farm is located at 341 Virginia Road in Concord, Mass., opposite Elm Brook Lane. The site is handicapped accessible. Parking is free. (Please park around back, not on Virginia Road.)

From the west, south, and east: Take Rte. 2 east or west, exiting onto Cambridge Turnpike in Concord.  If coming from the west, turn left; if coming from the east, exit by going straight, following signs to Concord.

On Cambridge Turnpike, turn right after about .7 mi. onto Hawthorne Lane. At the end, turn right onto Lexington Road. After about .7 mi. turn left onto Old Bedford Road. A half-mile later, turn right onto Virginia Road. Thoreau Farm is about .7 mi. down on the left.

From the north: From I-95/128 south, exit onto Rte. 2A west. Follow signs to Hanscom Field, and turn right at the blinking light onto Hanscom Drive (the airport access road.) Bear left after about .7 mi. onto Virginia Road. Thoreau Farm is about 1.5 miles on the right.
